About an hour ago I spoke with Dennis Shirley, who is spending the night
in LasVegas. He spent a fair fraction of yesterday afternoon in the
orchard, looking for the red-breasted sapsucker but without success. He
was back in the orchard this morning at about 8:15 a.m. and spent a few
minutes watching the tree on which it was seen over the weekend, but
without success. He then moved toward the middle of the orchard where he
happened upon the bird as it worked on a cherry tree. He watched it in
the same tree for nearly two hours and managed to snap some photos. At
about 10:20 a.m. the bird took off for the tall trees just north of the
mobile homes and south of the small shed on the west edge of the
property. He last saw it in the vicinty of a pair of ladder-back
woodpeckers, about 40' up the tree. Dennis and I both believe, based on
what we've seen, that if you want to see this beautiful little bird you
need to show up early and work your way with extreme care through the
orchard. Good luck!
