Utah Birders,
This morning (Sunday, December 31) at about 10:30 AM, I located the Northern Shrike at the location (Mormon Trail Road) previously described by Tim Avery. It was a very foggy morning out there, but the bird perched up nicely on a snag just to the east of the road about 6.5 miles north of Meadow Lane. I did not see the Black Phoebe. I also located two flocks of Horned Larks on Meadow Lane just east of Mormon Trail Road, but, as hard as I tried, I was unable to turn any of them into Snow Buntings.
Regarding the following, again please excuse my late report. The computer at brother number one's house where I am staying will not let me access my e-mail, so I have to beg brother number two for occasional evening access.
Yesterday (Saturday, December 30) dad and I again found both Black and Gray-Crowned Rosy Finches (Hepburn's and interior races) at the Ben Hame house on the Alta Bypass Road. We then headed to the Lee Kay ponds, where we managed to just miss both the Western Gull and the possible Iceland Gull. From there we went to Antelope Island where we had great looks at the Barn Owls at the buffalo corral hay barn. On the way back out along the causeway, we found a single female Barrow's Goldeneye on the south side and then a female Long-tailed Duck on the north side (dad's 500th bird!).
This afternoon (Sunday, December 31), I went looking for the Winter Wren reported to be in Provo Canyon a few days ago. I dipped on the wren, but my consolation was a Northern Pygmy-owl. The owl was high in a snag on the north side of the Provo River Parkway about a hundred yards west of the sign (on the other side of the canyon) for Squaw Peak. There were also at least two American Dippers in the River.
I will return to Arizona tomorrow a happy camper. Thanks again for all your help, it has been a very successful trip.
