This morning I headed to the location that Pomera Fronce has reported
the Varied Thrush the past week. Thanks to Pomera for her directions,
as I was unaware of there was a nature center at this location.
Around 8:10 when I was walking to the river the bird flushed off the
near bank and flew about 150-200 feet up river (to the south) into the
bushes hanging over the river. The bird would occasionally come out
onto the "sandbar" and feed up under the understory. For the next 40
minutes I saw the bird 3 or 4 times as it foraged in that general
area.
Other birds of note were 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler chipping away, a
Hermit Thrush on the far bank feeding.
There is an easier way to reach the area than parking at 4800 south
and walking the trail. There is a parking lot at I believe 5040
South, where the Nature Center is located. One can reach this lot by
taking Riverside Drive (500 West) south from 4500 South, or north from
5300 South to Vine Street. Head West on Vine Street till it dead ends
at the river. On the left is Daisy Lane. Turn here and take the
first right onto Morning Dew Drive. The road bends to the right and
comes to the parking area on your right. For those who haven't been,
the Nature Center really isn't visible form the lot as the roof is
level with the street elevation. However if you walk out onto the
viewing area, you are standing on top of the center.
There are stairs that lead down to a mini amphitheater and a wooden
fence on the left side. If you walk around the fence there are
several spots where you can view the west bank of the river where
Pomera told me the bird has been seen on 3 previous occasions.
Good Birding
Tim
