Hello Everyone,
I thought I'd write to relate a few recent sightings and also encourage
everyone to report the highlights of all the Christmas Bird Counts that will
take place over the next couple of weeks.
Yesterday 12/15 while taking part in the Zion Christmas Bird Count, Kevin
Wheeler, Josh Kreitzer, Pam Larson and Jan Boyer found a Red-breasted
Sapsucker on the grounds of the Cliffrose Lodge in Springdale. Quinn and I
were able to join them for a while to take some pictures of the sapsucker.
It is very approachable and yesterday was hanging around in the pine trees
northeast of the pool. Also Kevin, Pam, Jan and Josh discovered a
White-throated Sparrow during the count, across the bridge at the Springdale
City Park.
Other recent Washington County highlights include twelve swan's-a-swimming
at Sand Hollow State Park (11 Tundra Swans and one Mute Swan). The mixed
group of geese are remaining at the SR-9 (Hurricane) Sewer Ponds (Greater
White-fronted, Ross's, Snow, Canada, and occasional exotics). Also this
morning I saw a Rough-legged Hawk in the Washington Fields. This is my first
Rough-legged Hawk in Washington County since January of 2004. And a very
nice mix of ducks continues at Stratton Pond (Hurricane Fishing Pond)
including up to 160 Hooded Mergansers.
Happy Holidays to everyone (and please report your CBC findings!).
