Message: Dear Fellow Birders,

Rick Fridell observed a first-year Neotropic Cormorant on the west side of Quichapa Lake east of Cedar City today-30 Aug 2007.

The bird was among 12 first-year Double-crested Cormorants. Rick notes that it has a gray bill and dark belly.

To my knowledge this will be the first record of the species in Utah! Rick also saw 1 adult Bald Eagle (unusual this time of year), 2 Common Terns, and 1 Black Tern in the area.

Due to the large size of Quichapa lake, its relative inaccessibility, and the flighty nature of the waterfowl there, it is recommended you bring a scope with you to observe the bird.

Access is best achieved by taking Highway 56 west from Cedar City, turning left near the lake on 6300 West (a sign there reads "Meadow Ranch") , traveling about 1.4 miles on a dirt road to 1400 south. Take a right there and travel .7 miles towards the lake and to a nice overlook. The bird was perched on a submerged fencepost (part of a submerged fence line) opposite the overlook.

Rick may be reached on his cell phone for more information. He may have spotty coverage where he's at, but he'll return tomorrow evening.

Good birding!!!
