Mo Correll, Ryan O' Donnell and I birded Garr Ranch today from 915 to about
1. In a word, there were flycatchers EVERYWHERE at Garr Ranch. If you feel
the need to challenge yourself with Empidonax flycatcher identification,
Garr Ranch is the place to go. We certainly felt challenged, but came away
with solid identifications for Dusky (2 individuals) and Hammond's
Flycatcher (1 individual). We did however, leave 12-15 Empidonax
unidentified, partly because we had our binoculars busy with other birds,
and partly because many of the individuals were so close to each other that
it was difficult to keep track of who was who, and partly because we
disagreed on some identifications. Oh, and there were at least 3+ Western
Wood-Pewee's around as well.....

We also had a WINTER WREN hanging out underneath the large log just inside
the woods near old ranch house.

Other migrants...

Lark Sparrow-20
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher-1
Wilson's Warbler-6
Western Tanager-5
Yellow Warbler-5
Lincoln's Sparrow-1
Chipping Sparrow-3
Spizella spp.-2
Black-chinned Hummingbird-1
Broad-tailed Hummingbird-2
Rufous Hummingbird-2
Brown-headed Cowbird-a flock of 25 juveniles

We had the usual suspects on the causeway including plenty of Eared Grebes,
avocets, stilts, California and Franklin's Gulls. Unfortunately, we found
no peeps, but we did find 5 Semipalmated Plover near the first bridge west
of the gate, plus a Willet, 5 Long-billed Curlew, and a few Wilson's and
Red-necked Phalaropes.
