Message: A bright breeding-plumaged male RUDDY TURNSTONE was within the auto tour loop at Bear River MBR in Box Elder County today, Saturday, August 18, bulldozing clumps of grass and looking for bugs on the underside.

My vantage point was from the road about a tenth of a mile northeast of the observation tower and about 50 feet northeast of the bridge marked by yellow and black hazard signs (water flows under the bridge from the channel east of the road into Unit 2, which is inside the loop). I was looking north into the unit and the turnstone was 75 to 125 yards away most of the time in an area with patchy mud and water.

I strategically delayed my departure by lodging the mother of all bolts in a tire and then changing the subsequent flat. Who says you have to go all the way to Fish Springs for a whopping good flat? By the time I was rolling again on my spare, Merrill Webb and Glenn Barlow were arriving and we met at the south corner of the auto tour loop to look for the turnstone again. Merrill spotted it right away and logged a new Utah bird at the same time.

The turnstone was at that location for as long as I was; 9:30 am - 1:30 pm. I'm also pleased that the Short-eared Owls continue to show in this fourth visit in three weeks; I saw one at 6:30 am on the fence on the road to the refuge about 3/4 mile east of the Canadian Goose Club.

Bear River MBR is located west of I-15 at exit 363.

Kris
