While leading a birding tour for the Outdoor Retailers Expo this evening we found a juvenile female Summer Tanager at the entrance gate to the Inland Sea Shorebird Reserve west of the 7200 W exit on I-80 in Salt Lake County. It was actually perched on the right side of the gate down near the fragmites. After about a minute it flew off to the east down the canal and into the fragmites. It was quite a shock to see this bird here in northern Utah at this date, and in such seemingly atypical habitat (not a tree to be seen anywhere).
