- From the marshes and farmed fields in Nibley, Cache Co (1/4 mile south of
my house) on 5 Aug I counted the following:
Song Sparrows 3
Sandhill Cranes 3 (in flight)
Mourning doves 16
Barn swallows 24
Marsh Wrens 4
Yellow Headed black birds 31 (males)
Red Wing Black Birds 20 males, 12 females
American goldfinches 3
western Meadowlark 2 (1 seen, 1 heard)
Ring-necked pheasants 2 (1 male, 1 female)
golden eagle 1 (I named him "Cliff", he's a neighborhood regular)
Red Tailed Hawk 2
Mystery Bird. 1 see note #1

- from my yard:
Broad tailed hummingbirds, 2 (both females, I thing)
barn swallows 14 (see note #2 below)
Bullocks Orioles: 7 (adult males and females and juvies)
House finches: 8 (7 females, 1 male)
American goldfinches: 5 (3 males, 2 females)
Black-billed Magpie 3
European Starlings 17
Red tailed Hawk 2 (likely the same as counted above)
Mourning doves 11
House sparrows approx. 15
American Kestrels 4
white faced Ibis 87
Westen King birds 20 (see Note 3)
Lazuli Bunting, 1 male (from 8/2/07 escaping the fire on the mountain side)

Note 1: (MYSTERY BIRD)I believe, but am not absolutely certain yet, that
this is either a female or a juvie bobolink. The picks by Kent Keller on
Utah Birds photo gallery look exactly like the bird perched on the fence
post. I continue to seek it out to get a photo for ya'll to see and tell me
what you think.

Note 2: (SWALLOW COUNTS ) This number is a drastic decrease in the number
of swallows from years past. While this is the first year I've counted
birds, the swallows have always been a big feature in our yard. We've had
as many as 5 nests built on our house, all producing several young and the
power lines would be filled with them. Sometimes you could hardly walk to
the car without getting dived-bombed. this year there has been only 1 nest
and a scant

NOTE 3: The Western Kingbirds seem to be gone. They were everywhere, but
there are no songs or sitings of any of them. It seems that they, too, are
smaller in number than in past years. this year, we had 3 nests in our yard
and the trees across the street had 4 nests that I notice, while last year
there seemed to be about 2X that many. The number of birds perched on
telephone poles and power lines was definitely greater than this year, my
guess being about 30 -40 birds.
