After work one day (the Thurs before the July 4th weekend), I went out to
farmington Bay and saw an American Avocet chase off a Snowy Egret. I had
the same impression ... the Am Avocet was protecting a nest. I didn't have
my camera to take photos.
A Question: Does anyone know what a young ring-necked pheasant looks
like? I saw a bird today that I can't find pics of. It looked very
chicken-like, except it didn't have much shoulder between neck and body. It
had a thick bill, large eyes, feathers were dark brown with rusty outlines.
THis time I DID have my camera and as soon as I got the camera posed for the
shot, the bird flew off. It also may be some kind of raptor. It didn't fly
like a pheasant, but took off and flew quite high and far.
One other thing. I've noticed the Western Kingbirds seem to be absent.
Today is the first day I've made an effort to actually check on them and I
haven't seen any. It seems that all last week I did not hear their wonkie
morning song. There have been between 27 and 30 of these birds around my
neighborhood, now I can't find any. My options are: have space aliens
taken them or have they migrated or am I just not looking hard enough? I
never had to look very hard for them before, though.. hmmm.
I have more fun stuff to report, but I've got to go for now.
