Made a quick stop at Lee Kay Ponds this morning (8:s0 a.m.). Lots of good birds. In just over an hour saw 43 species. Had to leave to take care of the more mundane things in life. The Greater and Lesser Scaup are still there. The morning light and closeness (I did have my scope) of the birds allowed me to see the green (Greater) and purple sheen (Lesser) in the drake's head plumage. There were also lots (24+) of Ringed-necked Ducks. Two drake Blue-winged Teal. (One each at opposite ends of the main pond.) One lone Common Goldeneye and over a dozen Canvasback. Of interest to me as first time sightings for this year were six Black-crowned Night Herons and a Swainson's Hawk. Several newly hatched "gaggles" of Canada Geese parents and goslings, with many geese on nests. Also, saw several American Avocets on nests.
In the addition to the above saw the following: Mallard, Gadwall, American Widgeon, Red-headed Duck, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Great-blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Double-crested Cormorant, Pied-billed Grebe, Clark's Grebe, Eared Grebe, American White Pelican, California Gull, Franklin Gull, Forster's Tern, Coot, Killdeer, Willet, Black-necked Stilt, Barn Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Bank Swallow, European Starling, White-crowned Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Brewer's Blackbird, and Western Meadowlark.
