Milt Moody and I went up to the ‘Squaw Peak Hawk watching Knoll’ today (I’m
not sure what this place is called) and saw a lightly marked juvenile
Broad-winged Hawk. It came by at about 11:30. It flew in a little below eye
level then turned and circled directly over us. Great View! (We only saw
one. We expected none. We hoped for three.)

We hiked out to the knoll a little after 11 a.m. and sat there until 1:30.
Cooper’s Hawks were the bird of the day. We saw at least 11 Cooper’s. We
had seen several before we realized we should be keeping count. 2
Sharp-shined Hawks, 2 unidentified Accipiters, 1 Broad-winged, 3 Red-tailed,
1 Harrier and 1 Golden Eagle.

Other birds seen along the Squaw Peak road were Wild Turkey, White-throated
Swift, Scrub Jay, Steller’s Jay, Magpie, Raven, Black-capped Chickadee,
Mountain Chickadee, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Townsend’s Warbler, Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Chipping Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco.

To get to the knoll we saw the hawks from go up Provo Canyon. There is a
turn off on the right marked ‘Squaw Peak Road’ Drive up this road. When you
come to the fork turn left. After the pavement ends drive 1.5 miles on the
dirt road. At 1.5 miles there will be a trial on your right that heads up
through some large placed rocks and into an open overview. From here there
are two trails. Take the one that takes you along the face of the mountain
side, not the one through the forest. You can see the bare knoll ahead.
About a 1/4 mile hike.
