Hi,
Bob Huntington and I went searching for the Broad-winged again. After
several unsuccessful trips last year there is nothing like being in the right place
at the right time. Thanks to the Beyers for the directions and the
utahbirds.org web page for the sighting dates.
We went to the Jupiter Peak area and climbed the hill on the northeast side
of the parking lot. It is a very steep hill although not to long. We got to
the peak about 9:30 AM and saw our first hawk at 10:15. Yes it was a
Broad-winged. I had left my camera on the observation platform thinking that I could
get back to it and have time to take some pictures. Not so. I am amazed at how
fast they climb when they get to the thermals. We maybe had thirty seconds to
look at it. After I was sure what it was I made a dash for the camera. Way
too slow. It was a mere speck in the sky by then.
Next we saw a kestrel, then a Coopers Hawk, Sharp-shinned, then we had a ten
foot walk by from a Ruffed Grouse. Next was another Broad-winged. This one
was over the county line into Salt Lake County for Bob's list. Then another
Coopers, Kestrel, Sharpie, four Sharpies, a dark falcon that we both think was
a Peregrine, our third and last Broad-winged at 12:00, a Coopers, a Kestrel,
a Sharpie, a Coopers, another Coopers, Kestrel, and Coopers, and another
Sharpie. It was now 1:00 and we decided to leave. As soon as we started down, A
Rough-legged Hawk flew over that appeared to be hunting. On the way down the
canyon Bob spotted a Red-tailed at the entrance to the Spruces. I believe that
is a seven hawk day.
I don't know how often multiple Broad-wingeds are seen in one day, but this
was fantastic for both Bob and I. (life birds for both)
You will not need bug repellant, but don't forget the sun-block. If the only
requirement was color, I could join a tribe today.
