I was minding my own business at Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County this morning when a WINTER WREN insisted I go over and have a look. I was filling the Wasatch Audubon feeders and the wren's insistent chipping lured me off the paved path.

The wren was in the undergrowth on the east side of the park and east of the path as well. To reach the spot from the parking lot, walk the paved path along the east side. After passing the dock on the right, the path makes a gentle "S" turn in the next 100 feet or so. You'll need to leave the path on the left side (east) before the end of the "S" turn. Walk into what appears to be a room in the forest--a brush-free area shaded by mature trees under a heavy canopy. The floor is grassy and carpeted with pale orange leaves. The wren was chipping in the underbrush along the northeast edge of the room. I marked the spot with pink/lavendar surveyor's tape.

The wren did not respond to very soft pishing; in fact, it went silent upon hearing my gentle pishing. Only when I began to pish at about a medium volume did the bird appear and then approach me to a distance of 8-10 feet. The wren even perched without moving on a low branch for 5-10 seconds--an eternity as measured against the speed of a Winter Wren's normal movement. This is truly a species that needs to cut down on its caffeine intake.

A Hermit Thrush remains in the same area; you may hear its "chope-chope" call notes.

Gee. Running errands sometimes can be fun!
