A friend from So. Cal. Peyton Cook and I saw several good birds in
Washington Co. over the last couple days. He had me out way more than my
doctor would have approved of but I'll pay for that later!
At Lytle Ranch we saw a Red-breasted Sapsucker in the orchard that showed no
signs of being a hybrid (you have to be very careful in this area) that we
have great pics of. There was probably 20+ R N Sapsuckers also there. In the
trees just past the orchard there was a HY Tennessee Warbler and a Hammond's
Flycatcher was by the pond.
Below Gunlock Res. along the Santa Clara there was a Golden-crowned Sparrow,
Slate colored Fox Sparrow and a N. Waterthrush.
In and around St. George we saw a probable Least Flycatcher, another
Hammond's Flycatcher a Dusky Flycatcher and a late Virginia's Warbler.
The best bird was probably today in Central at a totally unexpected
location. Peyton had to head back home last night so I didn't plan to really
do any birding today. My girlfriend and I decided to walk out to the mailbox
(which is about a 1/4 mile from my house and I always take Binns when I walk
out there) and when we got to the end of my street I heard a Warbler chip
that didn't sound like a western type chip that I've been hearing lately.
The first bird I saw moving and got on was a Hammond's Flycatcher and I
knew that wasn't what I heard. After a minute of looking I saw something
else moving around and when I got on it I couldn't believe what I was
looking at. It was a beautiful tail pumping Prairie Warbler! It was a pretty
bright looking bird that I would guess was a HY male.We watched it for a
couple minutes and I thought I would try to pish it in close to let her get
a better look at it.Bad idea it bolted into the back yard on the corner
where I heard it chip a couple times but never saw it.
I went home to get a camera but when I got back I never saw or heard the
bird. The trees are pretty thick in the area so it could be around still but
I wouldn't think for long.I plan to look around again in the morning. I will
keep you posted.
It was a great few days of birding in the area with some nice birds.I saw
more Empids than I've ever seen here in Oct. A lot of good Sparrows seem to
be going through now and good Warblers are always nice to see. The R B
Sapsucker at Lytle is a great looking bird that will probably stay around
for a while so there is a good chance to see it if your out that way.
Good Birding,
Larry Tripp
