Waterbird/Raptor Survey
10/11/06

Total ducks around 340,000 which is about double the long-term average
(though I have a small sample size) and the count from this time last-year.
Composition was about 263,000 dabblers and 73,000 divers. The phenomenal
number of canvasbacks is similar to those in the 1960s. Total shorebirds
around 14,000 with the long-term average nearer to 9,000. Notable birds
include a horned grebe and Bonaparte's gulls. Only 6% of birds observed
were visible from the tour loop units and 1.5% from the hunt units. Tundra
swans beginning to trickle in. High numbers of northern harriers for this
time of year. All wetland units are full on the Refuge.
