The Prothonotary was seen this morning about 10:30 a.m. by Glenna
Cotter and Carol Gwynn. Thanks to all of those who reported. The bird
was in a small tree in the neighbor's yard across from Arnold's house,
and then it flew into a tree on the other side of the cemetery. It was
pretty fun to see a Texas bird in northern Utah. Look how much we saved
in airfare. . .
We also ended up at Brian's house in Tremonton; after about 45 minutes
of waiting, the Blue Jay came in to the feeders. Great looks at this
bird. Easterners would really laugh if they heard that we waited all
that time for a Blue Jay. But like they say, everything is location,
location, location. That jay was snarfing up seeds like there was no
tomorrow. It might eat Brian's family out of house and home.
On the way home, Carol stopped to see the Trumpeter Swan in Layton. It
is just as Bill described - you can study in feather by feather from a
few feet away. There were two Mute Swans, but I don't think any Mute
Swans in Utah are countable. Someone can certainly enlighten me if I
don't have the straight story on that one. There were also at least two
dozen Wood Ducks in the same location, but no Hooded Merganser.
Thanks to Arnold and Brian for letting us come and bug them a little to
get these birds. My only slight issue was with the weatherman. The
"partly cloudy" turned into rain for much of the day.
Carol
