You're absolutely right, Richard, Painted Redstarts have been suspected
to have bred in Zion for the past several years. Last year, a visitor
from out-of-state confirmed it by submitting a report to the records
committee of a pair of Painted Redstarts feeding a fledgling on July
23. That record was accepted by the committee in November of last year
and thus becomes the first confirmed record of breeding Painted
Redstart in Utah.
I think we can count this as another of apparently several species that
seem to be expanding their ranges northward - global warming, anyone?
Maybe someday an Elegant Trogon in Utah? ;-)
Good birding!
