Fellow birders,
My wife, Cary, and I (Josh Kreitzer) relocated a Painted Redstart (male) most of
the way up the Riverside Walk at the North end of Zion Canyon in Zion National
Park. The bird was beautiful, tame, and seemingly unfazed by three other
observers who pointed us to the bird by their rapt attention thereon. One of
them was apparently taking photos of it.
We found the bird in the proverbial "nick of time", for just as we rounded a
bend in the trail and found it, gusts from a building thunderstorm reached us.
We headed back to the Temple of Sinuwava shuttle stop after observing the bird
for a minute or two (it flew out of sight afterwards). Rain fell, we heard
thunder and saw lightning, and wind blew sand at us on our way back. It was
worth it!
Other birds seen in the canyon include: Hairy Woodpecker, Ash-throated
Flycatcher, House Wren, Yellow Warbler, and Song Sparrow.
Other birds of note seen in Washington City, Utah this weekend: Inca Dove,
Eurasian Collared-Dove, Phainopepla, and Abert's Tohwee.
For those interested in visiting Zion Canyon to find the beautiful and rare
redstart, here is some helpful information. Pedestrians and Cyclists can enter
the park on foot for $10.00. The park is entered just past and to the right of
the Zion Theater Complex at the end of Springdale. Free day parking is available
in the gravel lot just south and up the hill from the theater. A year-long pass
can be obtained for visiting Zion NP for $40.00. A National Parks Pass ($50.00)
will also allow entry to Zion NP and all other National Parks. For information
regarding passes for Senior citizens please click on this link:

A shuttle picks up just north of the visitor's center (which is just past where
you enter the park on foot). The shuttle takes about 8 stops to get to the
Temple of Sinuwava (which is the final stop before it heads back). There are
restrooms at the stop. The trail (Riverside Walk), is paved and though it has
some ups and downs, is fairly easy. (It is about 1 mile long, if you go all the
way to the end.)
Best wishes, and good birding!!!
