Greetings -

Have I mentioned how much I like the Jordan River Parkway south of 12600 South :). It continues to produce excellent birds!

Today as Cindy and Steve Sommerfeld and I were walking toward the new mitigation site, I commented about wanting to see a Sora. No sooner had the words left my mouth than we heard the unmistakable descending whinny of the desired bird. Then came the call of a second bird. One of the Soras came right out in the open not ten feet away and put on quite a show. He put so much thrust into one of his whinnies, we thought he was going to come right out of his shoes - funny.

We continued on to the northern end of the mitigation site where the best birds were two Semipalmated Plovers which Cindy spotted toward the west side of the mudflats. Among other things, we saw a Long-billed Dowitcher and Least and Western Sandpipers. On our way back to the parking lot, Steve picked out a bird in the bushes which turned out to be a Black-throated Sparrow. This was a beautiful fresh spring bird and we got excellent looks. This was an exciting find as I have never seen this bird outside of Washington County. Our last good bird before we left this area was a Great Egret which was coursing along the river.

West on 12600 South we found a pair of Osprey. Some of the birds we saw at the mouth of Butterfield Canyon were Mountain Bluebirds, Chipping Sparrows and Orange-crowned Warblers.

Our next stop found us in the foothills above Wasatch Blvd. where we found Chukar. The last bird we added to our list today was the Band-tailed Pigeon in Holladay.

Definitely an out-of-body birding experience today.
