Bear River Refuge
Waterbird Survey
6/15/06

Total number of ducks around 10,000 which is average for this time of year.
Total number of shorebirds around 3,000 is below the long-term average of
9,000. However, this is due to the large number of avocets and stilts
nesting out on Willard Spur that are obscured from view. Great Blue Heron
and other colony nesting species have juveniles close to flight stage
including Caspian tern and cormorants. Both Clark's and Western Grebes
with young observed. Third year in a row with canvasbacks here at this
time of year. Small molt migration? Eared grebes have colonies in
wetland units around the tour loop.

The California gull and canvasback totals are record highs for the month of
June.
