Hello Everyone,
I agree with Cliff (at least partly). We've been sorting through Ibis
flocks in Washington County for the past several years. I've looked at so
many White-faced Ibis (without even a hint of a Glossy, or a hybrid), that
frankly, I'd given up and decided that there really was no 'needle' in that
'haystack'. Larry Tripp has been predicting the occurrence of a Glossy Ibis
(following recent increased occurrences in SW California) for the past
several years. And if I'm not mistaken, Mark Stevenson and others located
Arizona's first in Tucson last year. So last fall, I again hardened my
resolve and monotonously studied every flock of White-faced Ibis I could
find (with still nary hint of a Glossy). So, I agree with Cliff in that I
don't think they've been around under our noses. The part I'm not sure I
agree with Cliff about, is that they're beginning to arrive....I'll believe
that when I see one! (of course there's another possible explanation...that
I simply can't tell a Glossy Ibis from a White-faced Ibis :).
Seriously, however I'd like to echo Mark's request that Glossy Ibis
observers photograph, document, and submit their sightings to the Utah Bird
Records Committee http://www.utahbirds.org/RecCom/ReportFormWeb.htm .

Regarding whether these birds have been missed in years past
my opinion is that they are just beginning to arrive in
numbers here in Idaho. I know one birder that scrutinized
thousands of White-face Ibis over the past six or eight
years looking for a Glossy in the same locations I am now
finding them. He is very sharp and I don't think he missed
many. The first one was found last summer at Camas NWR.
This year there are numerous birds present and they are not
difficult to find. I've located at least one Glossy or
hybrid roughly half the times I've stopped and checked a
flock.
Cliff
