General Waterbird Survey
6/6/06
Sandpipers are a frustrating group for me - specifically western sandpipers
versus semipalmated sandpipers. If anyone confident in their sandpipers
would be willing to check mine out I would be much appreciated. But you
have to come within the next few days as we are putting water into the unit
they are currently in and I think we will end up pushing them out. But
right now they are easy to find. Take the auto tour route, third shallow
pond on the right before Sheppard Bottom. My camera is not powerful enough
to take a decent picture either. Western are suppose to have the rufous
coloring on the head and sides and a bill so long it droops a bit at the
end. I'm not seeing that. But the entire day was redeemed by 20
long-billed dowitchers all in a group. The following birds were seen
within the survey route:
Canada geese 634
Mallard 178
Gadwall 198
Northern pintail 6
American wigeon 10
