Utah birders,
I recently moved out to Ohio from Utah County, so I've been out of the Utah
birding loop for several months now. But my brother who is also somewhat of
a birdwatcher was recently visiting a friend in Bloomington (just south of
St. George) around Dec. 2 and saw a beautiful male Vermilion Flycatcher in
his backyard. They observed him for quite some time, just sallying out to
feed on insects, and eventually got to within 15 feet of him. Sorry this is
so late, I didn't hear about it till yesterday. I don't know if the bird is
still there, but I figured the record might still be helpful for other
birders in the area, and a possibility for the CBC if nothing else.
Sibley's and the National Geographic Birds guides both show Vermilion's
being gone from Utah for winter, so this must not be too frequent of an
occurrence. That's all for now. Good luck birding, and happy holidays!
