Waterbird/Raptor Survey
11/30/06
Waterfowl numbers drastically reduced with onset of colder weather. All
units are about 90% froze. Total ducks around 24,000. The long-term
average for this week is 230,000. No shorebirds observed. Many tundra
swans have also departed. Three trumpeter swans observed on the tour loop
unit. I adult and 2 cygnets, along south end of tour loop about 150 yards
out from the road. Swans are highly visible from the tour loop unit along
with several species of ducks. 40% of birds observed were visible from the
tour loop, while 35% tallied were from the hunt units. Monthly record high
counts of pied-billed grebes and bald eagles. All time high count of
northern harriers.
