Waterbird/Raptor Survey

Waterfowl numbers drastically reduced with onset of colder weather.  All
units are about 90% froze.  Total ducks around 24,000.  The long-term
average for this week is 230,000.  No shorebirds observed.  Many tundra
swans have also departed.  Three trumpeter swans observed on the tour loop
unit.  I adult and 2 cygnets, along south end of tour loop about 150 yards
out from the road.   Swans are highly visible from the tour loop unit along
with several species of ducks.  40% of birds observed were visible from the
tour loop, while 35% tallied were from the hunt units.  Monthly record high
counts of pied-billed grebes and bald eagles.  All time high count of
northern harriers.
