It seems like a flock of great tailed grackles have become
residents in the area. They are commonly seen at
the Flying J in Willard, and at the WalMart
parking lot in Perry/Brigham City.
About eleven birds overwintered in the WalMart parking lot
during 2005/6. I suspect that they only survive this far north because
of their close association with people during the winter
months. I saw a few people dropping birdfood in the parking
lot, and there was other food for them like accidentally
dropped groceries.
It will be interesting to watch them to see if they
become well established, or if they are just too far
north to be viable in the long term.
